Disclaimer: Okay, I’ll be honest. I totally lifted the clever subject line for this post from my pal Marky’s recent newsletter. But since this a reference to the big show at her place on Friday night, I’m sure she won’t mind.

Maybe I’m too close to this whole “independent”, “DIY”, “under-the-radar”, “grass rootsy” (pick your favorite modifier) scene, but I’m still surprised when people ask me, “What’s a house concert“? To clarify: It’s not a karaoke party. And it’s not a cover band belting out Lynyrd Skynyrd covers while you dance the night away. (Though those can both be a lot of fun.)

In this context, a house concert is an up-close performance by an artist, most often a solo songwriter or a duo. It’s usually done in someone’s living room. Can be totally acoustic or slightly amplified (depending on how big the room is). And is a chance to listen to a songwriter unencumbered by espresso machines or the Jaggermeister dispenser (depending on the listening rooms you might normally be used to.) Dinner (or at least dessert) is often part of the night, either as a potluck or as a simple meal provided by the host. Basically, a house concert is the ideal setting for both artist and audience. (Did I mention food is often involved?)

If you’re anywhere nears north Monterey County (or south Santa Cruz county) this Friday night, you have a chance to hear exactly what all the fuss is about and see a pretty awesome example of the type of talent these pseudo-venues attract. Award-winning songwriter Cosy Sheridan will be at the Canyon Acoustic Society (yes, a house concert) this Friday, November 19th. Cosy has won awards at Kerrville and Telluride, has played everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Kennedy Center, and is a storyteller at heart. (Always a plus in my book.)

Since this is a “Canyon Acoustic” event, bring an appetite, as well. The whole night kicks off with a meal at 6:00 pm, followed by Cosy and her partner T.R. Ritchie. For complete details contact Marky (by email).
