He now lives in Hawaii with his lovely wife, Catherine, and studies environmental law. He\u2019s pretty hip. When he told me he\u2019s from New Jersey, I listed a bunch of really cool friends who are also from there. I asked him what makes Jersey so cool? (Color me naive. I\u2019m a native Californian.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">Dave said, \u201cMichael, the keyword is FROM. The cool people LEFT New Jersey.\u201d I can certainly cite some examples. (See these pages for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fredforyourhead.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fred Reiss<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/johnandreweddy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Andrew Eddy<\/a>, also former Jersey-ites.) But Jersey is also the birthplace of a very cool idea or two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #555555;\">\n<p><center><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xtan46myn7I\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nCase in point. Eighty three\u00a0\u00a0years ago today, on June 6th 1933, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/inventors.about.com\/library\/weekly\/aa980121.htm\" target=\"_blank\">very first drive-in movie theater<\/a>\u00a0opened in Camden, New Jersey. It was the brainchild of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Hollingshead\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Milton Hollingshead Jr.<\/a>,This first drive-in theater didn\u2019t even have speakers. Sound was broadcast directly to car radios, the same way it is now in the remaining 350 or so drive-ins around the country. Hollingshead was ahead of his time in many ways. Or maybe he was just too cheap to wire speakers throughout the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelgaither.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/starlite_cover_final.gif\" arget=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michaelgaither.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/starlite_cover_final-150x150.gif\" alt=\"starlite_cover_final\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Drive-ins are obviously very near and dear to me.\u00a0I spent more weekends than I can count at our own\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelgaither.com\/home\/music#starlite\" target=\"_blank\">Starlite Drive-In<\/a>\u00a0back in the day\u00a0here in Watsonville.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s give a big thanks to Mr. Hollingshead for a wonderful idea that\u2019s still standing in many places. In fact, one of the few remaining drive-ins, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.delseadrive-in.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Delsea Drive-In<\/a>, is located in Vineland, New Jersey.
