This one is no exception. It&#8217;s a long kitchen-table chat with Austin songwriter and producer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gurfmorlix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gurf Morlix<\/a>. If you don&#8217;t immediately recognize the name, you know him by the company he&#8217;s kept: He was in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lucindawilliams.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lucinda Williams&#8217;<\/a> original band and produced her early records. He&#8217;s recorded several albums with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertearlkeen.com\/welcome.html\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Earl Keen<\/a>. He produced <a href=\"http:\/\/slaidcleaves.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slaid Cleaves<\/a>&#8216; last five records. Gurf also recorded a tribute to the late songwriter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/review\/136879-gurf-morlixblaze-foleys-113th-wet-dream\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blaze Foley<\/a> a couple of years back. (Blaze was a close friend of Gurf&#8217;s.) <\/p>\n<p>I caught up with after a local show at <a href=\"http:\/\/treasuresroadhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Treasures Roadhouse<\/a> in Watsonville, CA. We talked about his inventive use of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YZOFvCpJvQs\" target=\"_blank\">Knockbox pedals<\/a> to give him a live percussion sound. Gurf reminisced about touring with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warren_Zevon\" target=\"_blank\">Warren Zevon<\/a> (a &#8220;genius&#8221; and a &#8220;real class act&#8221;), shared a wonderful anecdote about the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jessewinchester.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jessie Winchester<\/a>, and explained how becoming a producer was a simple matter, since he was &#8220;always the guy who ran the equipment&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Gurf moved to Austin back in the 1970s, in the era of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hitcher.com\/cosmic_cowboys\" target=\"_blank\">Cozmic Cowboys<\/a> and bands like <a href=\"http:\/\/thenewriders.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Riders of the Purple Sage<\/a>. Back then he was making $50 a night. (We both sadly chuckled when we realized that many musicians STILL make about $50 a night.) Gurf talks about both songs in the interview.
