{"id":5421,"date":"2014-04-17T19:35:56","date_gmt":"2014-04-18T00:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michaelgaither.com\/home\/?p=5421"},"modified":"2014-04-18T09:08:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-18T14:08:34","slug":"fisheye-ish-view-hang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.michaelgaither.com\/home\/fisheye-ish-view-hang\/","title":{"rendered":"A Fisheye-Ish View of &#8220;Hang It Up&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few months back, I had what will definitely one of my best gigs of the year: A solo slot at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodshed.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Woodshed<\/a> in Los Gatos. I split the evening with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craigrayburn.com\/rayburn-brothers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rayburn Brothers<\/a>. It was a way fun &#8220;Santa Cruz Americana&#8221;-themed show, with me solo and the Rayburns with full band in tow. (In fact, it was so much fun, we&#8217;re doing the same double bill at <a href=\"http:\/\/treasuresroadhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Treasures Roadhouse<\/a> on September 27th&#8230;but I digress.)<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to capture some of this, so my buddy Clark brought his <a href=\"http:\/\/gopro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">GoPro<\/a> camera, installed it on a mic stand, and captured my whole set from a fisheye-view sort of angle. Case in point: This version of my cell phone song, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdbaby.com\/cd\/gaither2\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Hang It Up&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Es1Cc2dndms?list=UUtzseDzL8qakcgMxy03e_eA\" height=\"225\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center>One of the ongoing dilemmas of trying to record a live show is that you need something that works well in low light. It&#8217;s multiplied by the fact that after you post to YouTube, that footage is compressed by an algorithm. (Or in plain English: &#8220;It tends to make the video look cruddy.)<\/p>\n<p>The GoPro used here (<a href=\"http:\/\/gopro.com\/support\/hd-hero2-support\" target=\"_blank\">Hero2 model<\/a>) has great quality video. It&#8217;s own unique quirk is that it&#8217;s designed to be an action camera. It has no viewfinder (gasp), so you estimate, or yank the memory card out and check in a nearby laptop a few times, or just crop the video, as I did here.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting angle though, and a nice live take on the song with a very vocal audience singing along. Thoughts on this low angle?
